Forms of Anima
If a man stays with his romantic/sexual fantasies, he "falls into the hands of the vampire"... he lives in an unreal life. A primitive tribe would say he has been bewitched, or devoured by the mother. Ritual of initiation is meant to avoid this. Passage can be called "Slaying the Dragon".
Over protective mothers resist their children finding mates.
Dangerous for women to identify with the projected Anima of the man.
Anima projection works as long as they do not live together. Marrying an Anima is very disappointing, for the man realizes the Anima is actually empty, and finds that the woman then attracts the Anima projection of other men.
If the man is too close to the mother, he idealizes women too much. He cannot approach women, or he experiences a split: he loves the "princess" but can only be with the "bitch"... He cannot join the "princess" and the "bitch" together in the psyche.
The Devouring Mother can be projected onto an institution or university ("alma mater").
Nightmares: The bang with which the unconscious says "pay attention to this one thing, WAKE UP to this psychological danger". Opposite gender attacker in dream is incubus or succubus. Vampire suck blood which is emotional energy... it is saying your are being drained by a fantasy... need to live life instead. If we split off or reject some energy it starts to suck us dry. "I feel tired, nothing means anything" -- these people have no life impulse, no pleasure or interest. The "vampire" is something split off so powerfully, it can only suck energy, it cannot do anything else (needs integrating).
How can a man get free of the mother complex? Have to tell her we have to leave her. Dreaming of "slaying the dragon/mother dragon/mother demon" which is what is anxious or afraid of living the masculine life. Mother had sowed in him a terrific fear of life which he had to overcome.
When a man has not developed his Anima, the feminine side is very narcissistic. He is to not just enjoy his own being in love which is a fantasy, but rather to love her as a human partner.
Transformation of dark woman to light is transformation from primitive fantasy to conscious.
Some men try to outwit the maternal dragon (fake intellectual victory), but it is not a real victory. It is not enough. It has to be done by action not thought. He has to leave the mother's place.

- Helen: Poetry, philosophy, spiritual companion, and sexual.
- Virgin Mary: Lacking dark earthy Eve side, lofty ideal
- Sophia: Wisdom that is closer to life, when he knows women but can protect himself from being devoured by her. Search for meaning.
